About Our Trust
Dedicated to preserving and sharing Ripon's rich heritage with our community and visitors from around the world.
Our Story
The Ripon History And Archaeology Trust was founded by passionate local historians and heritage enthusiasts who recognized the need to preserve and celebrate the remarkable legacy of Ripon and its surrounding areas. As one of England's smallest cities with one of its richest histories, Ripon deserves a dedicated institution to safeguard its past for future generations.
From Roman times through the Anglo-Saxon period, the medieval era when Ripon became a significant ecclesiastical center, to the Georgian and Victorian eras that shaped much of the city's current character, our region has witnessed countless important events and transformations. The Trust was established to ensure these stories are not lost to time.
Since our foundation, we have worked tirelessly to build collections, organize exhibitions, engage with the community, and create programmes that make history accessible and exciting for people of all ages and backgrounds.
Our Mission & Objectives
To advance the public in the history and heritage of Ripon and the surrounding area by the establishment and maintenance of a museum for the collection and display of items, especially those which are relevant to the history of the district, and by the provision of associated exhibitions and programmes in the local area.
Preserve
We collect, conserve, and protect artifacts, documents, and materials that represent Ripon's heritage, ensuring they remain available for study and appreciation by current and future generations.
Share
Through exhibitions, displays, and public programmes, we make Ripon's history accessible and engaging, helping people connect with their heritage in meaningful ways.
Engage
We foster community involvement through talks, workshops, volunteer opportunities, and collaborative projects that bring people together around shared heritage.
What We Do
Museum Collections
Our museum houses an ever-growing collection of artifacts, documents, photographs, and objects that tell the story of Ripon and its district. From archaeological finds to domestic items, from industrial tools to personal memorabilia, each piece in our collection contributes to a deeper understanding of how people lived, worked, and thrived in this historic region.
Exhibitions & Displays
We regularly organize exhibitions that explore different themes and periods of Ripon's history. These displays combine artifacts from our collection with interpretive materials, bringing the past to life in engaging and accessible ways. Our exhibitions change throughout the year, offering fresh perspectives and new discoveries with each visit.
Community Programmes
We believe heritage belongs to everyone. Our community programmes include heritage talks by local experts, hands-on workshops, special events, and collaborative research projects. We work with local groups, organizations, and individuals to ensure Ripon's heritage remains vibrant and relevant to contemporary life.
Research & Conservation
Behind the scenes, we conduct ongoing research into Ripon's history and work to properly conserve the items in our care. We welcome researchers and support historical investigations that deepen our understanding of the area's past. Conservation ensures our collections remain in good condition for generations to come.
